I spent 10 years there from the time I was five until we left when I was 14. Mon equipe? Les Canadiens, naturellement. Dad was born and raised in Sturgeon Falls. Ivan was a life-long Leafs fan, and his tour of duty at RCAF Station and later CFB St. Hubert was merely a stop on his career path.

President Barack Obama defied history to win re-election last Tuesday, November 6th. Obama was re-elected with the highest unemployment rate of any president returned to office since Franklin Roosevelt in 1936 and became only the second Democrat since Roosevelt to win another term. Bill Clinton was re-elected in 1996.

Why Obama Won

The re-election of Obama reflects the voice of a changing US demographic which includes an increasingly disgruntled middle class. The combined coalition of women, minority voters and young people who propelled him to office in 2008 supported him for re-election. Exit polls revealed middle class voters believed Obama was the candidate most in touch with people like them, understanding their concerns about unemployment
and need for access to health care…

As one market pundit remarked, “Facebook is about to become the “largest casino chip on Wall Street.” Reports are already indicating Facebook’s IPO may already be valued at three times or more that of the prior record holder in the tech industry, Google. In August 2004, Google was perceived as being richly over-valued, coming to the Street with a value just north of $27B for their internet search portal. Since that time…

Featured Video Related Article December 12th, 2011

In Washington DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After about four minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.

About four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

At six minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

At ten minutes, a three-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent – without exception – forced their children to move on quickly.

At forty-five minutes: The musician played continuously. Only six people stopped and listened for a short while. About twenty gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

After one hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

This experiment raised several questions:

In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

If so, do we stop to appreciate it?

Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…
How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?”

On Thursday past, a small but determined group set out to scale the CN Tower. I am pleased to report that the entire crew made it to the top. The team raised just over $2,000 between on-line and cash donations for the United Way, with Sharon Stewart showing us all how to fund raise. Thank you to all who donated and supported our small but resolute team – through the dog days of summer you kept us focused on those stairs.

We were led to the top by George Van Arragon a last minute substitute for an injured team member. With virtually no training, George sprinted up, held back only by those slower moving participants who weren’t fast enough to get out of the way of the machine that was George. A little over 15 minutes – we remain in awe. Ronal Diep was hard on his tail making a race of it.

A shout-out to Ashley Warren and Linda Odnokon who shaved an hour off our collective time – without you we might not have made it out of the holding pen.

Big thanks go out to the ground crew. It was great to have a comfortable seat to fall into when all was said and done.

Answering the question, What the Junior Golf Tour of Hamilton/Halton has meant to me, made me even more aware of how much it has contributed to my life and what a privilege it is to participate in. The Tour has provided a valuable experience in helping me develop my golf skills, allow me to make new friends, and learn life lessons.

Time is a wonderful thing to have.

When we are young, we wish to speed up time, to get beyond the years of “unable to do” because of age and get to “able to do” because we are of age.

What happens when we race through those years and reach the age when we wish to slow down time?
What happens if we don’t have the foresight to plan ahead to enjoy the years of retirement?
What happens when time is suddenly taken from us, leaving our families with not only the sorrow of the loss, but the financial burden that is now resting solely on their shoulders?

If we could just bottle up time, then foresight might not be necessary, but as the famous quote goes “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

We recognize and admire the fundraising commitments of BECEL RIDE FOR HEART. At BBSL, we are proud of our friends, colleagues, clients and community members that give their time every year to this worthy cause.
